Description- Almond is a medium heighted glorious tree. Tree has pink as well as white colored flowers. The fruit of the tree has stone less seed which is known with the name almond nut. Almonds are white in color and its outer skin is of brown color. It is encased in a hard shell. There are two types of almonds. One is sweet (Prunus amygdalu var. dulcis) and other is bitter (Prunus amygdalu var. amara). Sweet almonds can be eaten. The shape of these types of almonds is oval. Generally they have wonderful buttery taste and malleable in texture. Both types of sweet almonds (with or without shells) are available in market. On the other hand, Bitter almonds are used for the preparation of almond oil.
It is also used as a flavoring agent for foods and also for liqueurs like amaretto. Otherwise these types of almonds are not edible because it has toxic substances like hydrocyanic acid. Such compounds are removed while manufacturing almond oil.
History- Ancient historic texts include the description about almonds. Even Bible has the writing about this ancient food. It is thought that almonds have been originated in regions in North Africa and Western Asia. Romans also referred almonds as the Greek Nut. Today there are a lot of countries who used to grow almonds. Some of the countries names are Portugal, Italy, and Mediterranean Sea including Spain, California and Morocco. California has only one state that produces the almonds. Here, in California, Almonds were brought many centuries ago when the missions were taken by the Spanish but when the Spanish’ mission closed, tresses were abandoned. Again, Almond trees were back in California in 19th century via eastern United States. In 1840, trees of almonds were brought from Europe and then planted all over the world but the first place was New England. The reason was that climate on the eastern seaboard didn’t fit for the cultivation of trees there. So, the trees were planted in California and planted there as well.
